Laubach, Frank Charles
(1884–1970)
   Missionary and Educator.
   Laubach was born in Benton, Pennsylvania, and was educated at the Universities of Princeton and Columbia. He was ordained into the Congregational ministry in 1914 and first went as a missionary to the Philippines. Later he worked in other countries including India. He is remembered for his literacy project in which reading and writing were taught through the medium of phonetic symbols and pictures. His methods were particularly suitable for underdeveloped countries and he numbered the Indian leader, Gandhi, among his admirers. His writings included India Shall be Literate and Teaching the World to Read.
